MY ENERGY SLUMP

Posted on 5th May 2013 in EXPLORING OURSELVES, HELPING OTHERS

I just recently found myself in an energy slump which literally zapped the life from me.  It had me, my family and friends worried that something was wrong with my health.

This past calendar year I completed 9 triathlons, 1 of which was a full distance IronMan, and 3 others which were 70.3 Half IronMan races.  I attributed my chronic fatigue to all of the triathlon training and racing I did throughout the year.

EVER FELT THIS WAY?

EVER FELT THIS WAY?

I was understandably concerned with my health so I visited my doctor who conducted all the usual tests which all came back negative; this was very good news but there was still no official diagnosis or reason why I was feeling this way.  I remember listening to my doctor during one appointment explaining my symptoms to one of his colleagues who used the word “perplexed” with my symptomolgy.

This got me an appointment with an internal medicine specialist who also could not make any formal diagnosis.  I was resigned to the fact that my intensive triathlon training left me feeling tired and weak and that I had done too much.  The good news was that there were no major issues with my health.

A mental fog and physical weakness persisted for weeks, which turned into months; things still felt wrong long after the doctor appointments.  Each time I tried to resume any form of exercise I would be left feeling fatigued.

This got me to thinking about a conversation I had the previous year with a friend who recommended I visit a naturalist health practitioner at a Complimentary Health Care Facility for a metabolic efficiency analysis.

I am all about efficiency and I had been feeling anything but, so was willing to give it a try.  He suggested that the practitioner would take some samples and conduct tests which can determine “different levels” within the body.  I thought this to be a little “hocus pocus” as the naturalist is not a certified doctor but I was willing to try anything.

The results of the tests determined that I was very unhealthy at a cellular level.  I thought how could this be possible?  I am very fit, don’t drink or smoke, am not overweight and eat as healthy as anyone that I know.  I came to realize that I was too focused on maintaining/losing weight that I wasn’t feeding my body the required amounts of essential fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, or carbohydrates.

In essence, I believe I was too focused on “calorie counting” and weight maintenance that I was starving myself from the nourishment my body requires.  How was this possible?  My wife and I always joke about the large amounts of food that I eat and that the fridge is always empty.

Here I thought I was doing mostly everything right from a health perspective; what a wake up call and humbling experience.

Since the appointment I have been tracking the grams of healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates required specifically for my age, height, weight, and activity level.  This has been a real eye opener as I was not even close to consuming the necessary amounts of essential fats, protein, vitamins and minerals.  I have since educated myself about what the daily requirements are and have will continue to track my consumption daily until I get a good handle on what my body needs.

Additionally, I have been following a supplement regime to compensate for some of the missing vitamins and minerals from my diet.  Moreover, I have excluded soft drinks and coffee from my diet as they have the potential to create unhealthy acidity levels in my body.  Furthermore, I have been focused on eating a nutrient-dense diet which is easily digestible which means limiting dairy and red meat.

Thus far the changes have been relatively easy to make.  I thought coffee was going to be difficult, but I have replaced it with green tea which is a good substitute.

It’s taken some time for my body to absorb the changes.  The results have been fantastic as I have been feeling better than I have in quite some time.

Moral of the story:  Sometimes we carry on in life being unaware, doing “what we have always done” thinking it is the right thing, and then, bang, we are blindsided with poor health, broken relationships, or being let go from a job. It can be very harmful to our health to think you are doing something right, when actually you are way off base.

I am not sure whether I fully believe in the work of the naturalist and the Complimentary Health Care Facility.  What I do know for sure is that I am feeling substantially better.  The other thing I know for certain is that the appointment with the naturalist was a wake up call and has me thinking and learning more about health and nutrition.  At the end of the day I feel better and will be a more positive and productive guy.  That’s all anyone can ask for.

Learning and educating ourselves should be a lifelong pursuit; that is if you want to avoid an energy slump or some other unpleasant wake up call.

I hope you are able to learn from my experience; I know that I have.
