SETTING OURSELVES UP TO SUCEED

Posted on 18th September 2011 in EXPLORING OURSELVES, ONE DAN'S OPINION

I believe that each of us is moving forward or backwards in life, never stationary.  The word stationary suggests being motionless, still, or frozen all of which are contradictory to moving ahead. Thus if we are not moving ahead, we are actually regressing.

The speed at which we are moving is different for each of us and changes fluidly over time depending on the amount of energy we invest, the motivation we have, and our commitment to learning.

There are many ways in which we learn.  Some find direct teaching by others to be the most effective, while others prefer to learn from their own experiences through trial and error.  Regardless of how we learn it is important to understand the influence others have on our learning; who we choose to surround ourselves with is very important.  One of the most effective ways to learn is through the role modeling and instruction, which can happen with coaching or mentoring.

So how do we choose a proper coach, role model or mentor?  It would likely be a good start to find someone who you respect, trust, and admire, and who shares likeminded values and passion for the subject at hand.  Another important aspect is to seek out someone who is knowledgeable in the area and an expert with the skill.

So what’s next?  How can I set myself up to succeed?

I believe that in order to learn something and get good at it you must consider the following three areas: structure, motivation, and skill/competency.

Firstly, structure.  In order to give yourself the best chance to succeed it is important to have a structured plan identifying your goals and a detailed plan on how to achieve them.  In most circumstances people can find structure they need by following a detailed plan or manual, coaching, or feedback from others who have experience in the area.

Secondly, motivation.  You can have all the structure and skill in the world but when you don’t have the will to succeed all of that goes to waste.  Even the best-laid plans can be derailed by lack of drive and enthusiasm.  Furthermore, you can be highly skilled but if you are not motivated to channel it productively then it becomes worthless.  If you follow professional sports you see examples of this all the time.  We hear comments like, “(s)he’s got the talent but just isn’t trying”.  Skill without effort is ineffective.

Lastly, skill/competency.  The opposite of the aforementioned example applies when someone has high motivation (i.e. very eager) but has yet to have attained competency with the skill.

For example, if you were to have a high school hockey player attend a National Hockey League practice it would soon become obvious that they wouldn’t have the skill or speed to keep up.  The reality would be that they just wouldn’t measure up to the professionals and would likely be exposed for where they truly are with their skills.  That doesn’t mean he couldn’t get there someday with coaching (structure), practice (motivation and commitment) and skill enhancement (competency).

You can be as devoted and inspired as you want but unfortunately it just doesn’t happen until you improve your skill level.

So when it comes to understanding our shortcomings it might be helpful to reflect on whether we have the proper structure, motivation and competency to succeed.

Identifying whether one area is lacking becomes necessary if you want to accomplish your goals.  Objectively recognizing and understanding the limitation and getting help in that area is an excellent place to start on your road to success.

By attending to what might be holding you back, you can tap into the potential that is waiting to be realized.
